PLACE Map

Printable PLACE maps are our most comprehensive largescale paper map offering. On-demand availability is your guarantee that you will always receive the most current, relevant and highly-detailed survey information available for any location in the Republic of Ireland. All PLACE mapping is derived from our Largescale Prime DLM (Digital Landscape Model), providing national topographic coverage in Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) projection, with Urban and Rural series now combined into a single output option.

  Designed to address the needs of professionals in the Planning, Legal, Agricultural, Construction, Engineering and related industries, Tailte Éireann Printable PLACE Maps are customer-configurable, largescale topographic map extracts. They are optimised for printing and are available in black/white and grey, in a range of standard paper sizes from A4 to A0, in Landscape or Portrait orientation, to a scaled output of either 1:1,000, 1:2,500 or 1:5000.  

 These maps are characterised by ultra-clear, clutter-free, topographical information contained in an ITM geo-referenced map window with greyscale map detail displayed on a white background. Colour marginalia contains additional information regarding the map composition, including map series/sheet number(s), sheet centre coordinates and a QR code link to a ‘Largescale Map Legend’ available on www.tailte.ie. The map purchase date and order number are also displayed.

 All statutory and administrative boundaries are shown, along with detailed land information including property boundaries and parcel areas. The built environment is clearly presented with multiple features evident, displaying private housing and public buildings, gardens and yards, car parks and sidewalks, canopies and terraces, arches and steps, cemeteries and graveyards. Coastal and waterfront structures such as quays, wharfs, slipways, piers and jetties are similarly displayed. In urban areas, house numbers, named estates and road/street names display contextual information with prominent named buildings such as schools, churches and hospitals also shown.

Additional greyscale colouring and/or graphics differentiates disparate types of land-cover and features from one another including pasture and tarmacadam, cropland and green space, pits and quarries, bogs and marsh, flat rock and outcrops. Coastal landforms and hydrographic features such as water, lakes, mud, sand and shingle are similarly differentiated, with directional arrows shown alongside individual streams and rivers.      

 Maps can easily be site-centred by customer-guided screen selection using a fixed ground rectangle, equivalent to their chosen paper size, centred on the customer’s Area of Interest. Maps can also be specified by a pair of ITM coordinates, an Eircode or by street address. The default PLACE map is an English language product with Irish language text in Gaeltacht areas, but customers can easily specify an all-Irish product via an additional configuration option. 

 All A4 and A3-size PLACE maps are output as print-optimised PDF digital documents and are available to download for immediate printing. However, due to file-size and print-quality limitations imposed by most standard printers, all A2/A1/A0 size maps are professionally printed in-house by Tailte Éireann, or through one of our agents, and shipped by post in a protective cardboard tube.
