Tailte Éireann

About Tailte Éireann – Surveying

Tailte Éireann – Surveying has evolved from the Ordnance Survey Office which was established in 1824, later becoming a state body under the Ordnance Survey Ireland Act 2001. The functions of Ordnance Survey Ireland under the OSI Act 2001 have transferred to Tailte Éireann. The general function is to provide a national mapping service in the State. To create and maintain the definitive national mapping and related geographic records of the State.

The work of Tailte Éireann – Surveying is essential to the infrastructural development of Ireland. There is a growing recognition among decision makers that knowledge and understanding of location is a key component in effective decision making. To this end, Tailte uses a standardised, authoritative digital referencing framework that enables the consistent referencing and integration of national data related to location. This framework, known as the National Map (or the PRIME2 database), provides the means for GIS data users to accurately integrate and use multiple data sources to provide for better analysis and decision making, optimising resources and delivering efficiencies.

Additionally, the Surveying is responsible for GeoHive, which is the National Geospatial Data Hub that facilitates the discovery, evaluation, and access to authoritative geospatial data produced by Public Sector Bodies. Citizens, businesses, and policymakers benefit from GeoHive's data and application ecosystem, which ensures secure, efficient, and transparent management, distribution, and re-use of data.
